'Amateur' athletes permitted to use banned drugs

I was reading a report that thus far, eight Pan Am athletes have failed their drug tests (surprise! surprise!) when I came across this article in the Globe about  “therapeutic use exemptions.” The article says, in part.....

"In many sports, including the Pan Am Games, athletes are permitted to use banned drugs (including stimulants, steroids, beta blockers and diuretics) if they are diagnosed with a medical condition that requires those drugs as treatment."

The Olympics, Pan Am, and all other competitions have nothing to do with excellence and health and everything to do with ego, commercialism, and greed. Stop them.

If you want to run around the track faster than anyone else - feel free to do so - but society is not going to give you a medal - and you're not going to get sponsorship money or a fat cheque for promoting Nike shoes.
