R.I.P. Mary Travers

Dear Mary Allin Travers (1936 to 2009).... When the stupidity, lies, greed, and endless warring of today gets me down I listen to you and Peter. and Paul, and your angelic voice gives me hope when I hear.....

Oh the foes will rise with the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal and they'll know that it's for real
The hour that the ship comes in.

Then they'll raise their hands sayin', "We'll meet all your demands
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered"
And like pharaohs tribe they'll be drownded in the tide
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.

Written by Bob Dylan and recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary

Fake clowns behaving badly

It seems as if idiots in this French town are dressing as clowns then committing crimes. Interesting testament to human nature that bullies and criminals who are compelled by society to act civilly revert to their 'natural selves' when granted the anonymity of a mask, heavy make up, removed name tags, a crowd, or the cover of darkness.

Fascism is coming to a goverment near you

"Preventative Arrest?" Thanks but I already saw Minority Report and 1984 and neither movie had a happy ending, so as the shrill voices shout louder and louder about the big, bad Boogie Man (terrorism), we in North Americans edge close and closer to a modern version of fascism.

Perhaps we need to read George Orwell's words once again:

“Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this.

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake.

We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites.

The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that.

We know what no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture.

The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me.”

Happy (belated) Birthday Ezra Pound

Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (30 October 1885 – 1 November 1972) was an expatriate American poet and critic who was a major figure of the early modernist movement. His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision and economy of language. His best-known works include:

Ripostes (1912) (my personal favourite)
Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920)
and the unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos (1917–69).

Working in London in the early 20th century as foreign editor of several American literary magazines, Pound helped discover and shape the work of contemporaries such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Robert Frost and Ernest Hemingway. He was responsible for the 1915 publication of Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" and the serialization from 1918 of Joyce's Ulysses. Hemingway wrote of him in 1925: "He defends [his friends] when they are attacked, he gets them into magazines and out of jail. ... He introduces them to wealthy women. He gets publishers to take their books. He sits up all night with them when they claim to be dying ... he advances them hospital expenses and dissuades them from suicide."
